Exhibition curators:
Claudia Rapberger and Daniela Horvath
After the tragic early death of his beloved wife, Count Ernst Carl Hoyos-Sprinzenstein, was drawn more than ever to explore the world. In search of probation and adventures, he went to unexplored parts of the world.
In November 1893, attracted by African magic, he set out on a trip to Somaliland. He documented his experiences in numerous records, which were kept by the Hoyos family for decades. As a corresponding member of the Austro-Hungarian Geographical Society, he brought along topographic as well as scientific data from his expeditions.
The current special exhibition presents documents from the private archive of the Count Hoyo’s family that have never been published before. In addition to his personal insights into his journey, there is also much to learn about caravan roads, safari equipment and the dangers of the expedition. These topics are presented in rooms that were previously not accessible to visitors. The exhibition offers interactive stations and is therefore ideally suited for explorers of all ages.
The exhibition can be visited freely during the opening hours. We also offer guided tours via our special guides – howeve, we kindly ask for booking upfront.
However, every Sunday at 12, there will be a fix guided tour in German which will be done by the curators themselbes every last Sunday in the months.
